Fisherman run over by train

A fisherman who was sitting on the rail track under the influence of liquor died on the spot when a train ran over him.

The victim was Tikiriyadura Kamal Ratna Silva (42) of Waskaduwa, Kalutara North. Jamini Sunitha said in evidence at the inquest held at Nagoda, Kalutara General Hospital that the deceased was her husband and he was a fisherman. He used to consume liquor daily.

Girl drowns in Handapanagala tank

A girl student was drowned and three of her colleagues were rescued at Handapanagala tank when the canoe they were rowing capsized last Sunday evening (25th). The dead has been identified as Wijekoon Mudiyanselage Dhammika of Grade 10 at Athiliwewa Maha Vidyalaya.

Man assaulted to death

A man aged 28 has been murdered by assault by a gang of five in Aliyawetunuwewa within the Kekirawa Police area, according to a complaint made to the Kekirawa Police on April 25.

The man was identified as Malan Karunaratne of 6th lane, Ilukegama in the Kekirawa Police area.

Two brothers drowned, one missing

Two brothers of the same family and their friend a three-wheeler driver who were bathing in the Mahaweli River at Naranovita, Gampola drowned, last Sunday.

The bodies of the two brothers Pethum Niroshan Ratnayake, (20) and Asanka Kumara Ratnayake (18) were retrieved on the following day(yesterday), while divers are battling at the moment to find the body of their friend K. Asela Kumara, the three-wheel driver, according to Gampola Police.

More Lankans travel to US

Many more Sri Lankans are applying for tourist and business visas to travel to the United States, the US Embassy said yesterday, adding that prospective travellers should apply early for visas to the US.

Applicants are requested to send non-immigrant visa application and interview request forms via fax to the US Consulate, and may expect a response to their interview requests within two business days. All appointments will be scheduled by fax, reducing the number of personal visits that applicants must make to the US Consulate.

Travellers should begin non-immigrant visa interview and issuance procedures six weeks or more in advance of proposed travel.

IGP denies AFP report of assault on JHU

Refering to an AFP report which stated that seven Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) supporters were hospitalised following an assault yesterday, the IGP Indra De Silva told the Daily News last night that no such incident was reported.

The IGP further said that Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse had phoned him on Sunday night and made a request to step up the security of the monks.

"We have given the monks the maximum protection", IGP said.
