The European Union Election Observation Mission continues its activities after Election Day by carrying out post election observation. Six experts of the core team based in Colombo are still in the country and they will work on post election observation until May 2, said a press release from the mission. A final comprehensive report, assessing the electoral framework, the political environment, the conduct of the media during the campaign and the voting, counting and tabulation procedures, as well as post election period will be published by the end of May. The report will also include a series of recommendations on the overall electoral process and democratic environment in Sri Lanka. Following the publication of the final report, EU EOM Chief Observer, John Cushnahan, will come back to Sri Lanka to present it to election authorities, the Government, political parties, the media and civic society groups. "This is the third election observation mission which the EU has sent in the last four years and it is the first mission in which we have carried out a comprehensive post election analysis. "If our efforts are to have the maximum effect, in strengthening the integrity of the democratic process and to prevent a reoccurrence of the same problems which arose in the 2000, 2001 and 2004 elections then I would urge the appropriate authorities in Sri Lanka to implement the recommendations that we will make in our final report on this year's elections, many of which reiterate what we recommended in 2000 and 2001. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the Chief Elections Commissioner, his staff, all the country's political parties and civil society for their co-operation and courtesy, Cushnahan said. |
