Woman paralysed after wrong injection?

by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi

Was paralysis due to dog bite ? Or was it medical negligence ? Medical authorities will have to provide the answer to the unfortunate paralysis of a woman admitted to hospital after being bitten by a dog.

The unfortunate victim was a young woman from Girandurukotte. She was badly bitten by a dog to an extent where medical authorities decided on surgery to the wound. The woman became more unfortunate at the Girandurukotte Hospital where the vaccination was not available.

She was transferred to the Badulla Hospital. Doctors decided to perform surgery and injected the anaesthetic vaccination.

Health Ministry sources said that an anaesthetic injection has to be given on an empty stomach to avoid complications and the Ministry Special Investigation Unit had swiftly moved into action to pursue the cause that led to the woman's paralysis.

The first question that is being probed is how a person bitten by a dog was paralysed after an anaesthetic vaccination.

Flying Squad officials said the woman had been paralysed due to an anaesthetic injection given at the Badulla Hospital, ignoring the fact that she had taken her meal.

The Ministry had issued charge sheets on two doctors alleged to have been involved in this incident.

The second query before the Heath authorities is to inquire whether the doctors have followed proper procedures in injecting the anaesthetic vaccination by ensuring that the patient was kept on an empty stomach for 14 hours prior to the surgery.

Heath sources confirmed it was apparent that the patient became paralysed as a result of the anaesthetic injection.

The medical team involved in the incident have been taken to task. One of them is held responsible for sending a patient not fit to the operating theatre for surgery and another is held responsible for the vaccination.

Sources said the Medical Council had suspended the registration of one doctor who was completing his internship period.

Further investigations are conducted under the guidance of Flying Squad Director H.A. Ariyawansa.
