Among these are the Express Highways Projects including the Colombo-Katunayaka, Katunayake-Anuradhapura and Colombo Outer Circular Highway which were highlighted in the Freedom Alliance Election Manifesto as projects to be given immediate attention. These Projects were either begun and suspended, or dragged on or altogether abandoned owing to certain Ministers allegedly demanding bribes, as complained by companies who signed contracts for construction. The President has directed an immediate inquiry into these allegations and the work resumed as quickly as possible. Ihala Kothmale is one of such schemes the President wants to be re-started immediately. Rural Hospitals, Schools, Rural by-roads, Rural Power Houses, Housing Schemes and Drinking Water Projects are among other development projects that had been neglected during the UNF regime and have to be revived, said the Presidential media release. In view of the imminent danger of lapsing foreign aid to the tune of Rs.32 billion allocated for these development programmes the President has called for reports from authorities concerned within two weeks pertaining to the arrangements for reviving these projects. |
