SL targets increase in tourist arrivals
Sri Lanka is targeting an increase of over 5 %
arrivals from the United Kingdom this year. Already the market has
shown a 3.5 % increase up to September 2012 with arrivals to Sri
Lanka followed by India. ‘This is an important market for Sri Lanka
and the WTM would be a launching pad to increase arrivals from this
market,’ said Deputy Minister of Economic Development Lakshman Yapa
Abeywardane.

Serendib Horticulture Technologies consolidates trade overseas
Serendib Horticulture Technologies, has now
consolidated its operations in Rwanda. Over the past 10 months, the
company has exported over 500,000 fruit plants to Rwanda. These are
mainly local varieties of fruits, Serendib Horticulture Technologies

ADB to finance Lanka’s trade facilitation upgrade
ADB is to finance Sri Lanka’s trade facilitation
upgrade by committing almost 20 % of its global trade facilitation
budget solely to Sri Lanka. “As of end of 2011, ADB assisted Sri
Lanka’s Industry with more than $ 243 million and for trade, $ 555
million from Y2008. Also, ADB’s assistance scheme using our banking
sector is a model to be adopted in our industries.

Islamic banking assets to reach $ 1.5 billion
Sri Lankan Islamic banking assets would reach $
1.5 billion from the present $ 250 million in coming years, says
Amana Bank Chief Executive officer Faizal Salieh. Of the country’s
21.5 million people, about 8 % are Muslim and there is a strong
demand for Islamic financial products from the Muslim population as
well as from non-Muslims.
