Ragging at Peradeniya University:

Disciplinary inquiry against 13 students

Peradeniya University authorities will conduct a disciplinary inquiry regarding the 13 second year university students remanded in connection with the ragging of a first year student who was later admitted to the Peradeniya Teaching Hospital, University Deputy Vice Chancellor Prof Anura Wickramasinghe said yesterday.

As a preliminary measure, the 13 students have been suspended for two weeks and a three-member panel of university teachers appointed to conduct the inquiry, he said.

Prof. Wickramasinghe said compared to last year, there appeared to be an increase in ragging freshers this year.

Thirteen other students of the Arts and Science Faculties were suspended for one month following complaints of ragging.

The 13 students who were alleged to have ragged the first year student inhumanely were remanded by Kandy Magistrate till October 27.
