To train, test and certify construction workers:
CCI teams up with NAITA
The National Apprentice and Industrial Training Authority (NAITA),
and the Chamber of Construction Industry Sri Lanka (CCI), will implement
training and certification programs for the construction sector.
The objective of this joint initiative is to enhance the skills and
knowledge of semi-skilled and unskilled personnel engaged in the
construction industry by conducting a 'Bridging Program' to offer them
the National Vocational Qualification.

It is expected that this program will benefit mostly skilled
craftsmen who are already operating in the construction industry without
a recognized certificate.
In terms of a memorandum of understanding entered into between the
two parties, the Construction Chamber will organize and administer the
bridging program by providing facilities such as trainers and
consumables and by conducting theory and practical classes at Accredited
Training Centres and any other suitable centres approved by NAITA.
An aggressive publicity campaign has already been launched to attract
skilled craftsmen to obtain the National vocational Qualification
through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) systems. NAITA has
recognized the CCI for conducting and delivering of National Vocational
Qualification Framework in respect of occupations categorized under the
Construction Industry.
NAITA will also conduct Entrepreneurship Training Programs at the
request of the Chamber and issue the participants with a certificate,
jointly, under the ILO.
With less than five percent of the construction industry workforce
being accredited, this joint initiative will enhance the productivity of
the construction industry by facilitating accreditation of the industry
workforce.
This will give the workers due recognition for their skills while
providing them with a qualification that could be internationally
accepted as well. During 2008, the Construction Chamber produced over
800 new craftsmen by operating four training centres in the Southern
region.
The Chamber is planning to set up four training centres in the
Batticaloa district in the Eastern Province with German assistance. CCI
also hopes to spearhead a livelihood development program for conflict
affected people in the Northern and the Eastern regions.
CCI's CEO/Secretary General said that a large number of construction
workers who are unable to find suitable employment, would benefit by
these RPL programs which would recognize their skills and certify them
as skilled workers.
National Apprentice and Industrial Training Authority Chairman Amal
Senalankadhikara and CEO/Secretary General of the Chamber of
Construction Industry Dakshitha Thalgodapitiya entered into the
Memorandum of Understanding on October 7. |
