Trader fined
Dambulla magistrate Nimal Ranaweera imposed a fine of Rs. 5,000 on a
trader who was convicted for selling contaminated saffron powder.
A trader in Naula area was charged in this regard. Matale police led
the evidence.
Criminal gang arrested

A group of criminals was arrested by the Negombo Crime Division
yesterday at the Kirullu bridge in Negombo.
Police spokesman Senior DIG Nimal Mediwake said four gangsters who
were carrying out robberies and other crimes in the Negombo area were
arrested by the police. Money and other valuable items along with
weapons, were recovered by the police.
”A number of crimes had been reported to the Negombo police including
house breaking and snatching gold.
Negombo HQCI and the crime division rounded up the area and arrested
the four suspects”, he added.
The suspects were outsiders and were carrying out various crimes in
the Negombo area.
Help needed
One year and 10 months old H. Tharusha Malshan of 3/20 Service Lane,
Ihala Indibedda, Moratuwa has undergone a liver transplant in India with
donor funding as a remedy to a condition known as biliary atresia and a
failed KASAI procedure which had earlier developed into cirrhosis of the
liver.
Now he needs Rs. 25,000 monthly for follow up treatment including
drugs and blood investigations. Tharusha’s father H. Asanka
Priyadharshana says he is a carpenter by profession and unable to foot
this bill due to his family’s financial plight.
He requests philanthropists and the public to assist his son’s cause
by sending whatever financial contributions possible to ensure him
continued medical treatment as prescribed by doctors. All contributions

Work on fly-over bridge expedited

Construction work on the fly-over bridge near the Gampaha railway
crossing has been expedited on the instructions of Western Province
Chief Minister Prasanna Ranatunga.The Chief Minister after inspecting
the work, instructed the authorities to complete it within a month.
Readers' clubs in NCP

The North Central Provincial Education Ministry has embarked on a
program to establish Readers clubs in schools in the North Central
Province with the objective of upgrading the quality of primary
education sector.
Under this program, 56 selected schools were presented parcels of
reading books containing 347 books in each package by North Central
Chief Minister and Education Minister Berty Premalal Dissanayake.
M.A. Bakeer Markar commemoration
The SLBC will broadcast commemorative talks in all three languages on
late Speaker, Governor and Minister M.A. Bakeer Markar on September 10
to mark his 13th death anniversary.
The Sinhala talk on September 10 at 10.15 am will be by Transport
Minister Dullas Alahapperuma, English at 6.30 pm on the English service
by Sam Wijesinha and Tamil at 9.45 pm on the Tamil service by Prof.
M.A.M. Shukri, former Senator Mashroor Mowlana will also deliver a
special talk on the SLBC Muslim service at 7.05 pm on this day.
National symposium
The second National Symposium Food for the Nation Through Innovative
Agriculture organized by the Faculty of Agriculture, University of
Ruhuna will be held at the Faculty at Mapalana, Kamburupitiya, on
September 10.
Prisoners’ Welfare Day
“The Sri Lanka Prisoners’ Welfare Day Celebrations 2009” organised by
Prisoners’ Welfare Association in association with the Department of
