CPC strike called off

The Ceylon Petroleum Corporation unions yesterday called off their strike following a written assurance given to them by Presidential Advisor on Trade Union matters Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra to provide a solution to their problem within a two week time frame.

Measures in place to ferry stranded Lankans

The Government yesterday asserted it has taken all measures to ensure the safe return of Sri Lankans affected by the war in Lebanon. "The second batch of 53 workers are on their way home and another 776 in Beirut are awaiting their turn to be airlifted to Sri Lanka," Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera said.

The cutting of a branch of the Sri Mahabodhi in Buddha Gaya, India is not of recent origin and this issue has been raised by a group of saboteurs recently to mislead Buddhist devotees, Ven. Women gather materials for recycling from a closed-down factory site that once produced steel, iron and chemical products, in Hefei, in eastern China’s Anhui province. Many of China’s former state-owned factories have shut down over the past decade, leaving behind millions of workers unemployed or under-compensated in an environment left to natural decay. Chinese President Hu Jintao has flagged a raft of new policies this year to rein in the nation’s booming economy while warning about the dangers of unrestrained growth on the environment.
