US says foils new Al-Qaeda 'underwear' plane bomb plot

The United States has foiled a plot by Al-Qaeda's branch in Yemen to blow up a US-bound passenger jet with a new take on the "underwear bomb" near the first anniversary of Osama bin Laden's death, officials said Monday. The FBI said investigators were examining the explosive that appeared to be a revamped model of the bomb used in the Christmas Day plot of 2009, in which a plastic explosive hidden in a Nigerian man's underwear failed to detonate on a plane headed for Detroit.

Clinton sees progress on Asia tour

‘We talk about everything. Nothing is off the table’:

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Tuesday wraps up a tour of Asia dominated by thorny disputes, as she sees signs of progress in working through problems with emerging powers China and India. Clinton's week-long trip was dominated by a crisis in China over dissident Chen Guangcheng, who took refuge in the US embassy in Beijing, and ended in India where usually friendly US ties have been tested by disagreement on Iran.

China’s defence chief visits Pentagon

Amid diplomatic row:

US and Chinese defence chiefs pledged Monday to work together on cyber threats and forge a dialogue on security as both sides steered clear of a diplomatic dispute over a top Chinese dissident. Defence Secretary Leon Panetta and China’s Defence Minister Liang Guanglie struck a positive note at a joint press conference at the Pentagon, announcing a joint counter-piracy naval exercise in the Gulf of Aden later this year and tentative plans to cooperate in the sensitive realm of cyber security. Liang’s trip marked the first visit by a Chinese defence minister to Washington in nine years and US defence officals were anxious to avoid any mention of blind rights campaigner Chen Guangcheng.
