Nine Lankan athletes for World Youth Championship

Nine athletes who did well in the 55th Junior National Athletic
Championship held in Sugathadasa Stadium and Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium
Diyagama last week have qualified to represent Sri Lanka in the IAAF
World Youth Championship which will be worked off in Ukraine from July
10 to 14.
The participation of Sprinter Isuru Dilshan Wijeratne from
St.Sylvester’S College has not been confirmed as yet as he has to pass a
fitness test.
Three athletes have qualified in the 2000 metre steeple chase while
six athletes who excelled in 100 metre, 200 metre and 400 metre event in
the Junior National Athletics have also qualified for the World Youth
Athletic Championship.
Arosh Kariyawasam from Ananda College Colombo who won the 100 metre
running event in 10.90 seconds, P.P.Madushika from Kataluwa Maha
Vidyalaya Ahangama who became the under 18 best women athlete by
finishing 400 metre running event in 56.47 seconds and 200 metre event
in 25.55 seconds have qualified for the IAAF World Championship. The
required qualifying standard for boy’s 100 metre was 11.15 seconds and
the qualifying standard for girl’s 200 metre event was 25.55 seconds and
57.60 seconds for 400 metre event.
R.M.K.Ratnayake from St.Joseph’s College Kegalle, who set up her best
effort in the 200 metre event in 25.46 events. D.K.M.N.Sachinthana from
Nalanda College Colombo who clocked 11.02 seconds in the 100 metre event
and 22.59 seconds in the 200 metre running have also been included in
the squad.
A.A.Samith Lakmal from Seevali Maha Vidyalaya Ratnapura achieved the
necessary competancy level by clocking 22.82 seconds in the boys 200
metre event.The competency level for boys 200 metres was 22.75 seconds.
Three athletes from Walala A.Ratnayake Maha Vidyalaya reached the
qualifying standards in the 2000 metre steeple chase event.
Hansajith Malinda Weerasinghe(6:07.17), Bandula Madusanka Samaraweera
(6:08.21) and Mahesha Kumari Weerasinghe(7:10.95) were the star athletes
from Walala.
