Elephant runs amok at Perahera

A tense situation arose during a Perahera in Kandana on Saturday when
an elephant ran amok injuring six children.
The children were admitted to the Ragama Hospital. The Police and
elephant keepers brought the animal under control.

Garment factory worker presumed drowned

A 40-year-old female garment factory worker went missing and presumed
drowned when the boat she was in capzised in the Kalu Ganga near Galpata
in the Kaluwamodara area.
The woman was a resident of the area .
The boat was used to transport residents caught in the floods. Eleven
persons - six women, three students and two men, were in the boat at the
time of the incident, Police said.The rest saved their lives by swimming
ashore.
Investigations are continuing by Police with the residents to find
her body.

Vacancies exist in over 536 Grama Niladari divisions in the Southern
region, Galle, Matara and Hambantota district Secretariat sources said.
The number of Grama Niladari vacancies in the Galle district are 200,
Matara 196 and Hambantota 140. The total number of vacancies in the
Galle district are 896, Matara 650 and Hambantota 576.
Sources said under these difficult circumstances, people in these
districts have been inconvenienced and requested the authorities to look
into this and resolve the shortcomings. |
