Singer Finance Chairman, Director change due to nine year rule
|
Dr. Saman
Kelegama |
H.D.S. Amarasuriya, whose successful chairmanship spanned Singer
Finance's formative years, and who served on the Board of Singer Finance
for nine consecutive years since its incorporation, will be stepping
down from the Board of Singer Finance to comply with the Governance
Direction of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka. According to the Corporate
Governance, Direction 3 of 2008 of the Central Bank, directors of a
finance company can serve for a maximum period of nine years.
Asoka Pieris, current CEO of the Singer Group, too has served on the
board since its inception and completed nine years of service. Hence,
both H.D.S. Amarasuriya and Asoka Pieris will be stepping down from the
Board of Singer Finance (SFL). However, they will continue to serve on
the Board of Singer (Sri Lanka) PLC, the parent company of Singer
Finance.
Dr. Saman Kelegama replaces H.D.S. Amarasuriya as Chairman of Singer
Finance (Lanka) PLC. Dr. Kelegama looks set for a seamless transition,
after having served as a Director of SFL since 2008, and as the Chairman
of the Integrated Risk Management Committee of the Board.
The new Chairman of SFL, Dr. Kelegama obtained his Doctorate in
Economics from Oxford University, UK and earned his post-graduate and
graduate degrees from Oxford University and the Indian Institute of
Technology, Kanpur, India, respectively. Dr. Kelegama is the Executive
Director of the Institute of Policy Studies of Sri Lanka (IPS). He is a
Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences of Sri Lanka and was the
President of the Sri Lanka Economic Association (SLEA) from 1999 to
2003.
Dr. Kelegama has served on the Board of Directors of many government,
private sector and professional institutions and currently serves on the
governing boards of a number of regional and international institutions.
Dr. Kelegama has also served as Chairman in many Lankan and regional
associations and groupings and has represented Sri Lankan academia in a
number of official delegations.
