Trinity bounce back with 35 - 25 win over Peterites

Trinity College Kandy bounced back to score a superb 35 points to 25 win over the formidable St.Peter’s College Colombo to keep their hopes alive of clinching the Singer under 20 ‘A’ division league rugby title. Thus the lads from Kandy not only made amends for their 15 - 29 defeat at the hands of S.Thomas’ College Mount Lavinia, but also inflicted the first defeat on the Peterites this season.. The Trinitians made maximum use of the possession which came their way by running the ball at every opportunity, and also exploited the mistakes made by the Peterites.

The Peterite three quarters could not put the finishing touches to the three quarter moves, but also spilled passes at crucial moments. A crucial mistake made by Peterite Full Back Kevin Dickson cost them dearly before half time which saw the Trnitians gain a valuable 28 - 17 lead at the breather.

The Trinity’s three quarter gave a dazzling display with the halves combination of Naresh Perera and Tharinda Ratwatte hitting it off smoothly with Naresh capping a fine performance by scoring two splendid tries.

Centre Lochana Girihagama, Winger Santhana Sheik, Full Back and skipper Halique Wadood ran the ball at every opportunity testing the Peterite defence to the hilt. The lads from Bambalapitiya, were let down by their three quarters who squandared the hard won possession by their forwards by either knocking on at crucial moments or being tackled in possession by their opponents. This victory was a morale booster for the lions who moved to the top of the points table having scored more tries than the formidable Rajans who are in second place after their 33 - 24 win over traditional rivals Kingswood on friday.

Royal smash Wesley’s unbeaten record

Royal College also came up with a stunning performance to score a smashing 31 - 12 win over the unbeaten Wesleyites after trailing 7 - 12 at the breather.

After an unimpressive display in the first half, the lads from Reid Avenue got their act together to completely dominate the next 40 minutes.

It was their hard working forwards who paved the way for their victory with a terrific display in the loose.Shuaib Jabbar, Shahir Hanifa, Yasuon Weerasuriya, Keshan Peiris, Pasindu Perera and deputy skipper Shuayb Muthaliph played like terriers to dominate in the loose. However the Royal lock forwards Yasuon Weerasuriya and Dineth Karunaratne gave a poor display at jumping in the line outs conceding a large share to the opponents and also resorted to tapping instead of taking a clean catch on several occasions.

In the second half, Royal’s threes also came up with a good performance with skipper Rimzi Jamaldeen, Centre Devin de Silva, Winger Udesh Ranaweera (who scored two fine tries) and Full Back Nimshan Jayawardena stood out with a fine display.

However, in the last 10 minutes the Reid Avenue School could not add to their tally despite dominating due to their over enthusiasm and lack of fitness with on one occasion scrum half Nevaan Perera knocking on with tha goal line staring at him.

Wesley’s three quarters gave a good display in the first half by running the ball whenever they won possession and were rewarded with two fine tries by wingers Sajith Ariyawansa and S.R.Jurangpathy, but could not succumbed under pressure in the second session.

Science in historic win

Science College Mount Lavinia, despite taking the field minus four regulars, came up with a fine display to score a fine 25 points to 16 win over Isipatana College which gave them their second win for the season and handed the Isipatanians their fourth successive defeat for the season. Science College took a 14 nil lead at lemons through two excellent tries by H.T.Thilanka and Scrum Half Richard Dharmapala with Karunatilleke adding the extra points to both tries to which Isipatana replied with a penalty.

In the second half, the lads from Mount Lavinia put over two penalties to which Isipatana replied with a try by Shenal Deelaka and two more penalties fired across by Hirantha Perera.

Science College sealed the game in the dying stages of the game through a try by Chathura Gomes which gave them a historic win over Isipatana.
