Teenagers and young adults are increasingly
becoming alcohol users and ultimately abusers. They begin by
experimenting with drugs and alcohol. Some develop mental disorders
while others are driven to dependency by peer pressure. The use of
heroin, Corex D, benzodiazepine and psychoactive drugs, cannabis are
the common substances used. IV drug use is rare. The number
currently quoted could be the tip of the iceberg. Estimates for
Colombo alone show there are 200,000 substance abusers.

Harper and Baird should clean their own backyard before coming
to CHOGM
The Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and
his Foreign Minister John Baird are leading the charge against Sri
Lanka as the venue for this year’s Commonwealth Heads of Government
Meeting (CHOGM) in November. The language used by Harper and Baird,
including references to “evil” and “appalling”, seems quite out of
proportion to the significance of CHOGM as an international
gathering, as well as its utility to Sri Lanka as perceived by Sri
Lankans.

History is replete with hoaxes, many of them
having hit the headline. A hoax is a humorous or malicious
deception, designed to hoodwink friends, society and even the world.
Hilaire Bellock, the famous litterateur was of the view that a good
hoax, when executed with good competence, gains a sharpness, which
cannot fail to be noticed.
