Students of the Primary section of Wadduwa Central College celebrated
their Singithi Bak Maha Ulela to coincide with Sinhala and Tamil New
Year recently. Principal of the College, Ranasinghe Indrasena,
inaugurated the event. Indrasena along with the Primary school
Principal, Kanthi Siriwardhana, participated in the ‘lighting of the
hearth’ which was the very first ritual done at auspicious time. A lot
of kids were watching it with happy smiling faces.
Taking meals, financial exchanging, anointing of oil, reading a book
were all done at auspicious times at different places, under the
guidance of teachers and senior prefects.
The main aim and the objective of this cultural event was to make the
kids aware of Sinhala and Tamil New Year festival and the rituals,
traditions and customs associated with it.
The most attractive event was the climbing of the greasy pole where
many kids were seen waiting for their chances impatiently.
About fifteen beautiful girls, dressed up very attractively, were
lined up for the Avurudu kumari contest, on the stage in the outside.
The pillow-fight, popularly known as Kotta pora geseema was also
another attractive event, which was participated by many energetic and
strong boys, who were selected from grade 4 and grade 5 classes. Several
educational officers from the Kalutara Zonal Educational office
participated as invitees for the festival.
