Tourist arrivals up by 11.6%

Tourist arrivals to Sri Lanka in February 2013, has shown an
impressive 11.6% as against the previous year.
As expected, the winter traffic from Europe dominated arrivals with
Western Europe rising by13.7% and accounted to 43,635 and Germany up 8.1
percent to 8,276. Arrivals from France rose 4.0 percent to 6,632,
Netherlands was up 1.1 percent to 3,020 and Switzerland was up 27.1
percent to 2,980 and Russian arrivals up 9.6 percent to 3,286 and
Ukraine 2,788 up 38.7 percent.
The UK market too impressed, growing 26.1 percent and Sri Lanka saw
11,031 tourist arrivals. The UK arrivals were further expected to
increase with the introduction of the British airways flight.
Due to intense promotions for the Chinese market, arrivals were up
57.9 percent to 6,145 from an year earlier.
Despite the cancellation of Air Asia direct flights, the Malaysian
arrivals increased by 27.9 percent while South Asian visitors up by only
2.5 percent to 15,897.
