House takes up three Bills for debate:
‘Taxes imposed on certain sectors have been abolished’
Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa, presided when
Parliament met yesterday at 9.30 am. After the presentation of
papers and oral questions, the House took up the Inland Revenue
(Amendment) Bill, Notaries (Amendment) Bill, and Powers of Attorney
(Amendment) Bill for debate.

No takers for Year One in 2,000 odd schools – Bandula
There are 2,123 schools which had less than 10
students admitted to grade one classes last year, Education Minister
Bandula Gunawardena said in Parliament yesterday.Responding to a
question by UNP MP Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, the minister said there
had been 275 schools to which no student had been admitted to grade
one last year.

‘Security Forces not to blame for incidents in North’
Prime Minister D.M.Jayaratne said in Parliament
yesterday, that the Tamil National Alliance should not attribute all
incidents taking place in the North to the security forces. He said
that all their allegations have been unfounded and as a
proportionate, very less incidents have been reported from the
North, compared to the rest of the country. He said that there were
some internal clashes within the TNA and some of those attacks might
have been the result of those internal clashes.

Bills passed with amendments
Parliament yesterday passed four Bills with
amendments. The Inland Revenue (Amendment) Bill, the Notaries
(Amendment) Bill, The Registration of Documents (Amendment) Bill and
the Powers of Attorney (Amendment) Bill were passed with amendments.

President visits Parliament
President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday visited
Parliament and attended Parliamentary sessions for nearly half an
hour. He arrived around 3.10 pm and was warmly welcomed by the
Ministers and Members of Parliament.
