Three records tumble on day two at Beliatta

Three new meet records were set up on the second day of the All island Schools Athletics Championship at the D A Rajapaksa Stadium in Beliatta.

H M Milina Kumari Senevirathna of Sri Rahula National School Katugastota set up the first record in athletic when she won the 5000 Meter event for girls’ under 21 with a new record time of 18:16:21 minutes.

W W M Tharindu Madushan of Lunuwatta Central College Badulla won the 5000 M for boys under 19 event in a time of 15:27.1 minutes clipping off 0.6 seconds 0ff the 1996 record of 15:27.7 held by M M Samarapala of Ampitiya MV Kandy.

P W Harshani Samudra Kumari Dharmarathna of A Rathnayaka MMV Walawa established a new mark of 3.0M in the Pole Vault event for girls under 17 bettering the 2.65 meter mark set up by J M D Anne Piyumali of St Anne’s BMV Wattala in 2007

Milina Kumari’s timing yesterday was way ahead of the All Island School Games Colours standard clipping 38.39 seconds off the previous record. The previous record of 18:55:00 minutes was held by D M Ajantha Sanjeewani of J M Kumaradasa MV Wellawaya since 2002.

The finals of eleven events were concluded on the opening day while the finals of thirty two events were worked off yesterday.

L L L D Jayasekara of Mahinda College, Galle exceeded the colours standard while S R D Jayamaha of Pamunugama MV and Pasdinu Wihana of C W W Kannangara MV , Mathugama finished by reaching the required timing, that is 3.40 metres in the boys under 21 pole vault . The girls’ under 17 triple jump saw two athletes , H D Vidusha Lakshani ( 11.36 metres )and N L Nilaweera ( 11.26 metres ) leaping away from the others to grab gold and silver.

They also exceeded the 11.20 metre stand to receive colours. Obtaining the official results on time was a painful task. Although the meet should have concluded by 4 PM with the last event scheduled for 3:25 PM it went on past 6PM on both days.
