Artillery shell discovered

An unexploded artillery shell was unearthed by workers constructing
the new Manmunaithurai- Kokkaddichcholai bridge yesterday. The Police
informed about this, defused the shell.
The bridge is being constructed with Japanese aid.
RI for abusing girl
Ariyapala WANSATHILAKE- Kurunegala Central Special
An 18 year old youth who found guilty of abusing a nine year old girl
was sentenced to two years rigorous imprisonment suspended for 10 years
and fined Rs 1,000. In default, he was imposed another six months simple
imprisonment by Kurunegala Acting High Court Judge D N Samarakoon. The
Judge ordered the accused to pay Rs 75,000 as compensation to the
victim.
Over 300 tanks desilted
Sampath SANJEEWA
Desilting of 304 small tanks in the Anuradhapura district has now
been completed under the programme to offer relief to farmers affected
by the recent drought. Divisional Secretaries in the district reported.
Reports said 500 small tanks in the district were selected for
desilting under this programme and work was started on 489 of them.
Batti gale destroys 20 houses

Nearly 20 houses were damaged when a gale swept through Porativupattu
in the Batticaloa district on Tuesday. A woman aged 36 who was injured
was admitted to Kaluwanchikudy Base Hospital. The woman, S Rohini is to
undergo surgery, medical superintendent K Sugunan said.
Fined Rs. 222,169,000 for power piracy
A man who pleaded guilty to pirating power by tampering with the
electricity meter was fined Rs. 252,169,000 by Matara Chief Magistrate
Udesh Ranathunga.
CEB investigation officers the above sum was made up of Rs. 30,000 as
court fines and Rs. 222,169,000 as compensation for loss of revenue.
NWP Governor felicitated
Ariyapala WANSATHILAKE, Kurunegala Central Special
A ceremony was held at the Governor's office yesterday to felicitate
former Governor Tissa R. Balalla, who was re-appointed North Western
Province Governor by President Mahinda Rjapaksa on Monday.
The special felicitation was held under the patronage of Wayamba
Provincial Council chairman R D Wimaladasa.
Padaviya Raja Maha Viharaya Vihardhipathi Ven. Rekawa Ginarathana
Thera chaired the meeting. North Western Province Chief Minister Athula
Nimalasiri Jayasinghe delivered the key note address.

Modera Lions children's programme
The Lions Club of Modera, Mattakkuliya has organised a day filled
with fun and activity for a group of children with special needs on
October 14 at De Mazenod House, Farm Road, Mattakkuliya. Over 100
differently able children from various children's homes in the area have

Ananda blood donation
A blood donation campaign to mark the 126th Founder’s Day ceremonies
of Ananda College, Colombo, organized by the Old Anandians 70 -75 Group
will be held at the school's centenary hall on October 20 from 8am to 3
pm. Each blood donor will be given a free life insurance cover for
Rs.50,000, said group president Anura Edirisinghe.
Awards ceremony
The environment awards ceremony 2012, organized by the Environment
Unit of the Sri Lanka Mahaweli Authority's River Basin Management
Project for students in the North Central Province, will be held at the
Kalawewa Aqua Culture Training Centre tomorrow.
International Coconut Day
International Coconut Day 2012 will be celebrated at Temple Trees

Dengue prevention campaign
An islandwide Dengue prevention campaign organized by the Central
Environment Authority (CEA) in collaboration with the health Ministry
and other state institutions will be held today.
The Colombo District Programme will start from Rajagiriya Ayurveda
Junction with the participation of Kotte Municipal Council, Divisional
Secretariat, Sri Lanka Navy, Welikada Police, Rajagiriya Ayurvedic
Hospital, Department of Official Language, District Election
Commissioner Office, Hatton National Bank and other government
institutions and volunteer organizations.
New SWARBICA chairperson
National Archives Director Dr Saroja Wettasinghe was appointed
chairperson of the South West Asian Regional Branch of International
Council on Archives (SWARBICA) at its annual conference held in New
Delhi recently. She is the former treasurer of the council and a past
pupil of Devi Balika Vidyalaya, Colombo 8. |
