The Gampaha District Coordinating Committee has approved the release
of a nine acre plot in Makola to the Kelaniya University for the setting
up of its Engineering Faculty.
Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa disclosed this at a
meeting of the District Coordinating Committee at the Gampaha Kachcheri
recently.
Minister Rajapaksa said the Deyata Sevana Tree Planting Campaign
would be launched next month. He said the mere planting of trees would
not suffice and continued attention and care should be given to the
trees until they grew up. Taking up the problems and issues brought up
at the meeting, the minister said urgent attention of the NHDA should be
drawn to prevent sewerage from the Yakkala Lewisawatta Housing Scheme
flowing into the Attanagalu Oya as it would be a major environmental
hazard.
He said the Korean ambassador who visited Gampaha had promised Korean
aid towards development work in Gampaha. The ambassador who visited the
Ranaviru Sevana had also discussed arrangements to build a factory in
the premises to enable War Heroes to engage in employment. Gampaha
District Secretary J.J. Ratnasiri and several other officials also
addressed the meeting.
