Move to uplift English education

Ariyapala WANSATHILAKE-Kurunegala Central Special

Education Minister Bandula Gunawardena said on Monday at Kurunegala Maliyadewa Girls School that the government has embarked on a plan to uplift English education throughout the country.

The minister was speaking after donating 143 computers among rural schools in the North Western Province.

He said nothing has been done to arrest the falling standards of English although problems were discussed in the past.

He said the modern world poised for globalization, English has become the easiest medium of access to all things, good and wonderful to life. Every citizen should be given the opportunity to attain high proficiency in the language.

The minister said parents must co-operate with teachers. The co-operation of the parents is essential for efficiency in the development of schools. He said children lived amidst violence. They should be guided in a systematic way to face challenges and develop a good personality.

Provincial Education Director J G N Tillakaratna also spoke.
