Heavy rains trap visitors in Minneriya NP

Around 20 visitors, including 12 foreigners and three children, were trapped inside the Minneriya National Park due to heavy rain, Wildlife Department sources said.

Mineriya Police, Wild Life Department and Minneriya National Park officials were attempting to rescue them. The visitors had entered the Park at noon in five vehicles and heavy rains have trap them in the Park.

They were reportedly on higher ground of the Park. Heavy rains continue to wreak havoc in the Polonnaruwa district and it is reported that when the incident was reported yesterday five hours continuous rain had been reported in the area.

Water levels continue to rise in the National Park resulting some areas in and around the park submerged in water.
