Debussy Week at AF Kandy
Alliance française de Kandy celebrates the 150th birthday of Claude
Debussy, one of the most famous French composers from the late
nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, is perhaps known for his Clair
de lune and the symphonic poem La Mer.
Claude Debussy developed a strongly individual style and went against
the methods of classical composing by using uncommon arrangements that
created a new language of sound.
Debussy was composing at a time when music, art, literature and the
performing arts not only influenced each other.
Some artists were also creating collaborative works that spanned art
forms. Among composers, Debussy is a prime example.
Debussy Week will take place from October 12 to 22 where there will
be an exhibition.
The Chief-Guest at the Opening ceremony, on 12th at 6.30 pm, will be
Cultural and Cooperation Counselor, Embassy of France,Michel Treutenaere.
The exhibition will focus on Debussy's relationships with fin de
siècle art, Japonisme, Impressionism, Symbolism and other currents in
the arts to present nineteenth-century French art.
A selected group of art students, from different schools of the
district, will participate on the 13 and 14 to Art Workshops and the
students' exhibition will be inaugurated on October 16 at 6 pm.
Finally, on Friday October 19 at 6.30 pm, an evening of poetry and
music will be presented by teachers and students with the participation
