In an effort to minimize the careless disposal of e- waste across the
country, the Hatton National Bank would be conducting an islandwide
e-waste collection campaign starting from October15 to19, 2012 in
collaboration with Think Green Pvt Ltd, a registered e-waste recycling
company for proper disposal.
All 244 branches of HNB, will act as e-waste collection centers for
the above initiative. Useless electronic equipment such as broken
computer hardware, refrigerators, stereo systems, are known as e-waste,
harmful and hazardous to the environment as well as human health, all
electronic equipment contain harmful substances such as mercury, lead,
cadmium and beryllium.
HNB requests all Sri Lankans to drop off any unwanted computers,
phones and similar electronic items at any of HNB customer centres
during this period and these items would be handed over to Think Green
Pvt Ltd.
"Today e-waste has become a serious problem in the country,
accounting to 4-5 tones every single day, due to the increasing use of
electronic items such as computers, CDs and mobiles.
The use of electronics is growing at a very fast pace than ever
before in the country.
The usage of mobile phones too is growing by 8% per annum, while
computer usage has been growing by 10% per annum. The 70% of e-waste is
toxic and ends in land filling," Think Green (Pvt) Ltd., Head of
Marketing, Sivahar Muthuramalingam said.
"e-waste has become a serious problem in the country. HNB has
initiated the above project as a part of its corporate social
responsibility initiative. As a leading bank in the country, HNB has
continuously made concerted efforts during the last couple of years to
act in an environmentally friendly manner. As a part of HNB's "Green
pledge" initiative, the bank has continually been engaged in investing
large scale tree planting project with the assistance of its customers,
staff, school children and planted over 38,000 trees in the last 2
