Two tuskers from the Sinharaja forest are terrorizing residents of
Ilubakanda, Denawakkanda, Galawata, Bambumale in Rakwana. Efforts by
residents to chase away the tuskers have proved futile.
Wildlife officials at Weddagala were informed, but there is no
response, residents said.
Dengue spreads in Katuwana

Dengue is spreading once again in Katuwana DS area. Katuwana RDHS Dr
R Pushpakumara said Amudamana, Horavinna, Middeniya are dengue prone
areas.
Katuwana DS office, Pradeshiya Sabha health authorities are engaged
in clearing areas where mosquitoes breed, with the assistance of the
residents. RDHS said dengue patients are now treated at Embilipitiya,
Kirama and Katuwana hospitals.
First dry zone botanical garden in 2016

The first dry zone botanical garden in Sri Lanka at Mirijjawila,
Hambantota will be vested with the people in 2016.
The construction work commenced in 2006. It was set up to conserve
and protect the plants and ayurvedic herbs, Director General, Peradeniya
Royal Botanical Gardens, Dr Cyril Wijesundera said.
He said the Avissawella botanical gardens will be for the protection
of wet zone plants and ayurvedic herbal plants.
Abandoned infant found

A 15 - day infant was found abandoned in a parked trishaw at
Firdhouse Beach Road in Kattankudy by Police last Friday.
The infant was handed over to the Kattankudy Base Hospital who handed
over it to the Child Care Unit of the Batticaloa Teaching Hospital.
Eleven-year-old killed as lorry crashes into house

A 11-year-old boy was killed when a brick laden lorry crashed into a
house in Inguruara in Embilipitiya on Saturday night. Another person who
was seriously injured was admitted to the Embilipitiya hospital.
The dead boy had been identified as Kalanchige Lasith, a student
while the injured is Morakanda Gamage Sugathadasa. The lorry is under
police protection following attempts by villagers to damage it. |
