Mahaweli water for Thuruwila reservoir

The Mahaweli water panel has decided to release 1,800 acre feet of Mahaweli water to feed the Anuradhapura Thuruwila reservoir within a few days.

It is planned to divert water from the Kotmale reservoir to the Kalawewa tank to avoid any illegal tapping enroute as this supply of Mahaweli water is only meant for drinking purposes said Mahaweli 'H' Zone Residential Project Manager R B Sirisena."The main concern is the supply of drinking water to Anuradhapura and the suburbs. The de - silting of the Lunuwewa and Katthoruwa tanks is in progress.

"The Agrarian Services Department has provided four backhoes and three bulldozers for this purpose," he said.

"Steps have been taken to restore around 3,500 deep wells for cultivation in the 'H' area where Rs 10,000 is paid to each farmer for to meet the expenses," Sirisena revealed.
