Navy in smashing 33-13 win over CR and FC
The Sri Lanka Navy Sports Club staged a superb second half rally to
score a smashing 33 points (one goal, four tries, two penalties) to 13
(two tries, one penalty) win over CR and FC in their Plate Championship
match of the Caltex ‘A’ Division League Tournament played at Welisara
yesterday after trailing 10-13 at ‘lemons’.
The Red Shirts came up with a gallant display to take the lead at
half time through tries by wingers Heshan Gunaratne (one) and Nuwan
Chamara (one) and a penalty fired across by full back Reza Mubarak to
two unconverted tries by the sailors.
The Navy powered by their forwards came back storming in the second
half to dominate the game and ran out worthy winners. The sailors scored
their tries through winger Samantha Lakshan (one), replacement hooker
Dulanjana Wijesinghe (one), centre Dilip Methruwan (one), scrum half
Suranga Pushpakumara (one) and hooker Bilal Hassen (one) with Samantha
Lakshan adding the extra points to one try while full back Branda
Weerakkody put over two penalties.
The sailors also earned a bonus point by scoring five tries which
propelled them into second place with 42 points in the final points
table - a fine achievement indeed having finished in third position in
the last two years.
They won all three matches in the second round against Kandy SC
(29-25), Havelocks (35-19) and CR (33-13). |
