Ponting powers Aussies to victory

Ricky Ponting cracked an impressive 90 not out to steer Australia to an easy eight-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in the second one-day international played at The Suriyawewa Mahinda Rajapakse Cricket Stadium on Sunday. Ponting hit one six and eight fours in his 106-ball knock and skipper Michael Clarke made an unbeaten 58 as Australia surpassed Sri Lanka’s total of 208 with more than 11 overs to spare for a 2-0 lead in the five-match series.

Kandy SC retain league title for 11th successive year

Defending champions Kandy Sports Club left an indelible mark on rugby League Championship when they won it for a record 11th successive year by defeating Havelocks Sports Club by a good margin of 23 points (one goal, two tries, two penalties) to 12 (one goal, one try) in the final game of the Caltex League Championship played before a large crowd at Nittawela yesterday. At half time Kandy led 15-7.

The Sri Lanka Navy Sports Club staged a superb second half rally to score a smashing 33 points (one goal, four tries, two penalties) to 13 (two tries, one penalty) win over CR and FC in their Plate Championship match of the Caltex ‘A’ Division League Tournament played at Welisara yesterday after trailing 10-13 at ‘lemons’.
