Rains destroy seed B-onion cultivations

Over 180,000 kilos of seed onions cultivated to obtain B-onion seeds in the Matale District have gone under water due to heavy rain.

All the cultivations in the Matale district have been affected due to prevailing rain and according to Matale district Agriculture Deputy Director Prasanna Pallemulla, the actual damage was not possible to assess.

The seed onion is taken from the cultivations every year and the seeds are being distributed among 6,000 farmers for cultivation during the yala season.

Pallemulla also said even the future crops would face damage due to the prevailing heavy rains and even the paddy cultivation in areas such as Dambulla and Laggala might completely get affected by the rains.
