PS chairman held in bribery case

Walallawita Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Udeni Atukorala was arrested by Bribery Commission officials for allegedly soliciting a Rs 1.5 million bribe from the Bentara Paradeshiya Sabha chairman. It is reported that he had accepted the bribe to provide a permit to transport soil.

 

Anti-Dengue programmes in Kelaniya schools

Public Health Inspectors attached to the Kelaniya MOH Office have taken steps to launch anti-Dengue programmes in 20 schools under the purview of the Kelaniya MOH Office. The programme will be conducted on the instructions of Kelaniya MOH Dr Wasantha Rajapaksa.

 

Principal dies during training

[June 30 2013]

Raddolugama Pagnananda Madya Maha Vidyalaya Principal W.A.S. Wickramasinghe died following a stroke while exercising in the morning at the Rantambe Cadet Camp. Wickremesinghe, 52, was among the 97 participants in the month long military leadership training programme for school Principals.

 

Senior Minister leaves for Geneva

Senior Minister for International Monetary Co-operation and Deputy Minister of Finance & Planning Dr. Sarath Amunugama will leave for Geneva tomorrow to represent the Sri Lankan Government at the Annual Ministerial Review of the Economic & Social Council of the United Nations

 

President unveils Buddha statue

President Mahinda Rajapaksa unveiled a six feet Samadhi Buddha statue erected at the entrance to the Mihintale sacred area concurrent to the 2320 Mihindu Jayanthi commemoration. The President performed the first flower and oil lamp offering to the statue constructed by the Civil Defence Force (CSD).

 

Train crashes into parked lorry, one dead

One died and four passengers were seriously injured when a train bound for Galle crashed into a lorry at Angulana . According to Police sources, the train was packed with rush hour passengers knocked the train when it was parked close to the railway track.

 

Man nabbed with ganja in bag

[June 21 2013]

A 31-year-old male, resident in Paththinigama, Galnewa was arrested by Galnewa Police on afternoon while carrying 1.508 kgs of ganja hidden in a travelling bag after alighting from a Colombo-Anuradhapura bus at Paththinigama junction.

 

 

President opens Lakviru Sevana : Sales Complex for disabled soldiers - President Mahinda Rajapaksa participated at the opening of Lakviru Sevana, a sales complex to market products made by disabled soldiers built under the patronage of Ven. Elle Gunawansa Thera with the co-operation of the Dharmayathana Trust at 272, Denzil Kobbekaduwa Mawatha, Battaramulla yesterday. Ministers, Parliamentarians, Secretary to the President Lalith Weerathunga, Chief of Defence Staff Air Force Commander Air Chief Marshal Roshan Gunatilake, Army Commander Lt Gen Jagath Jayasuriya and Navy Commander Vice Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe were also present.

Real estate sector booming

TFC targets Rs one billion profitm

The country’s real estate market has a positive impact due to the reduction in interest rates and The Finance Company performance has seen a marked growth last year. The Finance Company (TFC) has around 3,000 real estates islandwide and it sells 300 blocks per month at present. The real estate market recovered from a stagnant situation soon after the war and the industry is now booming, The Finance Director and Chief Executive Officer Kamal Yatawara said.

Western Province:

Bus strike called-off

The Private Bus Operators Association yesterday called-off the token strike which was scheduled to be held in the Western Province today. The private bus operators demanded an increase of a minimum bus fare by one rupee. According to Association President Gemunu Wijeratne, the Association arrived at this decision following a discussion with the Government Ministers last night.

Conflict dragged on due to blunders - President

Certain elements trying to destabilize country:

President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday said that Sri Lanka as a whole had to suffer due to a protracted conflict because of betrayals, subjugations and blunders made in the past. He was of the opinion that the conflict could have ended much earlier and the devastation caused by it to both man and property could have been avoided to a great extent, if certain administrators in the past had engaged in prudent and selfless decision making on behalf of the country.

Health teams rushed to flood-hit areas

The Health Ministry has taken steps to prevent epidemics in flood hit areas and protect people from diseases, a Ministry spokesman said. According to the spokesman, Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena yesterday instructed the Health Ministry Secretary to send five medical teams to Ampara, Batticaloa, Trincomalee and Polonnaruwa districts to control a possible outbreak of epidemics.
