ICC Under-19 World Cup:
Sri Lanka heads Group ‘C’
Back to back half centuries from Bhanuka Rajapaksa and a hostile
spell of bowling from skipper Chatura Peiris helped Sri Lanka to a
convincing 134 run victory over Canada in their ICC Under-19 World Cup
Group ‘C’ second match worked off at Lincoln in Christchurch yesterday.
Sri Lanka also got valuable batting practice time in this match while
making full use of their 50 overs to post a formidable 276 for six and
then comfortably see off the Canadian reply by 134 runs.
ri Lanka got off to a watchful start, until Banuka Rajapaksa
increased the tempo scoring a beautiful 68 following his unbeaten half
century in the opening match of the tournament against Zimbabwe on
Sunday.
Rajapaksa only hit four boundaries but ticked over the strike, moved
his feet well to the spinners and hammered the ball to all areas of the
ground. Middle order batsman Akshu Fernando then provided some late fire
works with a rapid 43 off just 25 balls, with his ability to find gaps
in the field.
Canada were their own worst enemy, spilling half a dozen chances
including four off medium pacer Zain Mahmood, who showed his team mates
how it was done taking three good catches including a stunner at cover
where he picked up the ball just before it hit the deck.
In reply Canada made life tough when they lost aggressive left hand
opener Ruvindu Gunasekara for five. Opening partner Hiral Patel dug in
with a stoic innings of 69 from 110 balls which included two towering
sixes,
Man of the match Chatura Peiris was the chief destroyer for Sri
Lanka, snaring an impressive haul of five for 25, knocking the top off
the Canadian batting line up with a great opening spell of seam bowling.
Canada could not endure past the 40th over and were dismissed for
142.
This was also a huge morale booster for the Sri Lankan team ahead of
their crunch game against the hosts New Zealand on Wednesday at the same
venue which will decide the group champions.
