Govt to decide in due course

Delegates want Presidential poll:

President Mahinda Rajapaksa addressing the annual National Convention of the SLFP at the Khettarama Stadium yesterday evening noted that the Government would decide in due course what election should be held first. When the President inquired from around 100,000 SLFP members who had filled the Khettrama, whether they wanted a Presidential or a Parliamentary election first, the overwhelming response was - a Presidential poll.

According to a PTI report headlined ‘Fonseka’s claim without substance- India’ India dismissed former Chief of Defence Staff Sarath Fonseka’s claim that its troops were put on alert at the instance of President Mahinda Rajapaksa following fears of a coup.

Malani bags Best Actress Award for second time

Veteran actress Malani Fonseka clinched the Best Actress award for her role in Akasa Kusum (Flowers of the Sky) at the Levante International Film Festival held in Italy on Saturday. This is the second time Malani won an international Best Actress award for her portrayal of Sandya Rani in Prasanna Vithanage’s movie.

Government responds to Fonseka’s statements

Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga acknowledging the letter of resignation by General Sarath Fonseka as Chief of Defence Staff on behalf of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, said that he has been directed by the President to inform him that a further communication would follow in regard to the numerous statements made by him (General) in his letter and annexure A.
