Bus skids killing child
Rafik Jalaldeen
A child was killed and at least 10 others were injured when a CTB bus
skidded off the road in Padukka yesterday afternoon.
Police spokesman Senior DIG Nimal Mediwake said an CTB bus belonging
to Homagama depot plying from Homagama to Meegoda met with an accident
in Ratabaladeniya, Padukka around 12.30 pm and turned turtle into the
nearby jungle.

A concert Ginimelaya organized by the Piyum Prajamula Organization
along with the Pipena Kekulu Lama Samajaya in Daluwatta, Payagala
sponsored by C.C.I.C. project of the H.C.C. Community Development
Program in line with the World Children’s Day will be held on October 3
at the Payagala Pradeshiya Sabha Playground from 6.00 p.m. to 10.00 p.m.
International Elders’ day
Dhamma school teachers and students in the Kurunegala district have
made arrangements to offer meals and other requirements to 1,250 inmates
of 25 elders’ homes in the Kurunegala district on October, 1 to mark the
International Elders’ Day.
Vap Magul ceremony
The Vap Magul ceremony organised by the Cultural Affairs and National
Heritage Ministry will be held at the Gombaddala Vel Yaya in Mulatiyana
divisional secretariat division today (30) from 9.00 a.m.
Cultural Affairs Minister Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena will be the chief
guest at the ceremony.
Lankan fishermen held in India
The Indian Coast Guard has arrested 46 Lankan fishermen and seized
six boats off the Nagapattinam coast after they allegedly entered into
Indian waters.
The fishermen were taken into custody at around midnight as they had
crossed the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL), officials said.

Minister Amunugama to attend C’wealth conference
Public Administration and Home Affairs Minister and Deputy Finance
Minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama will represent President Mahinda Rajapaksa
at the Commonwealth Finance Ministers’ Conference to be held in Cyprus
later this week.
He will then proceed to Istanbul, Turkey to attend the IMF World Bank
Annual Sessions.
He will have bilateral discussions with all the Finance Ministers of
the Commonwealth countries.
Driver to stand trial over death of Lankan
Jarratt Swan, of Ferntree Gully was accused of killing a Sri Lankan
in Australia by not stopping at a marked crossing.
Sri Lankan refugee Thiruvadivel Sriskantharajah was crossing Stud
Road, Dandenong, on January 14 when he was allegedly hit and killed by a
four-wheel drive driven by Swan.

Cop remanded in assault case

Teldeniya Magistrate Prasanna Liyanage remanded a police constable
who allegedly assaulted a three-wheeler driver while under the influence
of liquor.
According to police, the constable had attacked the victim with a
bottle.
The victim who is a resident of Watapana is receiving treatment at
the Kandy hospital. Rangala police are investigating.
Mahatma Gandhi schols
The Indian Government has launched the Mahatma Gandhi Scholarship
Scheme. Under this scheme, around 3-4 meritorious students at the
O/Levels are selected and provided with a scholarship of Indian Rupees
1,500 per month for a period of two years.
Education Minister Susil Premajayanth will be awarding the
scholarships on October 1 at 3.30 p.m. at the auditorium of Education
Ministry, Isurupaya, Pelawatta, Battaramulla.
Buddhist talk
U. Mapa will deliver a public Buddhist talk in English on “Grasping
of the five aggregates” at a meeting of the Servants of the Buddha
Society on Saturday October 3, at 4.30 pm at the Maitri Hall, Lauries
Road, Bambalapitiya.
Badur Mowlood
The recital of Badur Mowlood, will be conducted by Al Haj Moulavi M.T.
Hillurudeen (Falahi) and Al Haj Moulavi A.B.M. Mubarak (Falahi) on
October 1 after Magrib prayers and will continue until Isha prayers at
the Nawala Jummah Mosque.
Prayers, religious lecture
Prayers will commence on Sunday, October 4 with Rathibathul Jalaliya
by Moulavi A.B.M. Mubarak (Falahi) and Y.M. Rafi. It will be conducted
after Magrib prayers and continue till Isha prayers.
A religious lecture will also be conducted by Ashsheikh Dr. P.C.
Pakkeer Jaufar Ph.D. (Simon Fraser, Canada) (Head/Department of Special
Needs Educations), Open University of Sri Lanka and An eminent Ulama
after Isha prayers, at the Nawala Jummah Mosque.
Speech contest
The Young Mens Christian Association Kandy has organised a English
Speech contest for schoolchildren in Kandy schools to coincide with the
“World Childrens Day’ at the Trinity College Auditorium on Thursday -
October 1 commencing at 9.30 a.m.
Anniversary celebrations
The Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWC) commemorates its 60th
anniversary on October 1. A number of events have been organized by the
DWC to mark this occasion. The main event will be held at the BMICH at
9.25 a.m. on October 1 under the patronage of Prime Minister Ratnasiri
Wickramanayaka and Environment and Natural Resources Minister Patali
Champika Ranawaka. A wildlife exhibition will also be held at the BMICH
(Committee Room B) from October 1 to October 3 from 9.30 a.m. to 6.30
p.m.
Chinese art exhibition
The Listeners Association of China-Radio International in Sri Lanka
together with Chinese Embassy in Colombo will organize a Chinese art
exhibition to celebrate the 60th anniversary of People’s Republic of
China.
The exhibition will be held today at the National Library exhibition
hall at 10 a.m.
Islamic lectures
Scholar Ash-Sheikh Arkam Nooramith M.A will deliver a talk on ‘What
is Allah’s Mercy’ at 10.30 a.m. on October 3 at the Nimal Road Jummah
Mosque in Bambalapitiya, along the Marine Drive.
These lectures thereafter will continue every Poya day in English by
Learned Islamic Scholars of repute, mainly catering to English speaking
Muslims in Sri Lanka, under the guidance of Darul Uloomil Islamiyya. |
