New laws ensure best practices

The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) is to be given wider powers, including permission to arrest without warrant any errant job agent or individual violating established protocol in a bid to ensure and enforce best ethical practices in labour migration.

Lanka gets US$ 5m for de-mining

Minister meets UN High Commissioner for Refugees:

The UNHCR has granted Sri Lanka US $ 5 million to purchase 10 flailing machines to further accelerate the de-mining program in the North. This is on a request made by Senior Presidential Advisor Basil Rajapaksa MP and Chairman of the Presidential Task Force for Resettlement, Development and Security in the Northern Province and discussions Disaster Management and Human Rights Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe had with UN High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres.

Cut-off marks likely to go up this year :

The cut-off marks of the Year Five Scholarship Examination will probably be issued by the first week of next month, Examinations Commissioner General Anura Edirisinghe said.The Examinations Department has been expediting the result issuing process, the Commissioner added.
