Bajaj goes to Jaffna

David Pieris Motor Company Ltd (DPMC), the sole agents for Bajaj motorcycles and three-wheelers in Sri Lanka has entered the market in the Northern capital of Sri Lanka.

The company opened its first sales office in Jaffna, fulfilling a long-felt need in the peninsula. Bajaj motorcycles, and Bajaj three-wheelers, are already available in Jaffna.

But this is the first time DPMC launched its operations in the region.

The sales office will provide an economical, fuel-efficient and convenient mode of transport, ideally suited to their everyday requirements.

The three-wheeler industry will offer the youth an opportunity for self-employment and provide sustenance to their dependent family members.

A number of persons has already been short-listed to be appointed as sales dealers, supplementing the operations of the sales office.

The company also aims to expand its Bajaj service and spare parts dealer network in the region, to offer its valued customers in Jaffna an after sales service.

DPMC has provided training on Bajaj motorcycle and three-wheeler repairs and maintenance to instructors at the Jaffna Vocational Training Authority at its state-of-the-art training facility at Bandaragama.

These instructors will train unemployed youth and school-leavers in the area to set up Bajaj motorcycle and three-wheeler repairs and maintenance points throughout the region, thereby providing employment to these youth and an excellent after-sales service to the customers.


‘Mortein stop diseases’

Mortein has undertaken different initiatives to educate the consumers on how best they can prevent all mosquito-borne diseases. “Mortein provides various options for eradicating mosquitoes, however, the public can reduce the risk of mosquito-borne diseases by taking some basic preventive measures and this is what Mortein is trying to achieve”, said Reckitt Benckiser’s Managing Director, Reazul Chowdhury.

Over the past three years, Mortein has spent over Rs 15 million in non marketing initiatives to drive awareness on protection and prevention of mosquito-borne diseases.

Through numerous community programs, Mortein has tried to educate the consumer on how to control the spread of such diseases.

“The program so far has covered 150 locations across the country and has been received by people from all walks of life.

Reckitt Benckiser’s Marketing Director, Zakaria Ahmed said that Mortein had been investing on awareness and educational campaigns on dengue and other mosquito related diseases, over the past few years.

“Mortein went to Tangalle this year and commenced an awareness campaign when dengue initially erupted”.

Category Manager, Ms Surangi Fernando said, “The Pest category range consists of coils, aerosols, vaporizers, mats, refills and rat products, with Mortein commanding the market leader position in almost all the segments”.

Fernando said that the Mortein mobile unit conducts awareness programs at all public places, bus stands, market places, places of worship.

She said that banners, billboards, posters and live radio updates served to reinforce their message with over 500,000 dengue awareness leaflets having been distributed to the public.

Mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria, chikungunya and dengue have been raging across the country at an alarming rate and the spread of these diseases is directly linked to easily available breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

“Mortein wants to make people realize that the spread of these diseases could be curtailed”, said Ahmed.

Each year the Mortein program has succeeded in reaching out to over 800,000 people or more from all walks of life.
