APIIT students organize FOSS Con 2009

The APIIT student community is organizing APIIT FOSS Con 2009, a free and open source software conference to educate undergraduates and graduates about the benefits of using high quality Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) in education, government, at home, and in business. It will be held on October 2 at 08.30 a.m. at the APIIT City Campus.

APIIT-Sri Lanka offers British Degrees in Computing/ IT, Business Management and Law, students are continuously encouraged and supported to take part in extracurricular activities to enhance their skills and knowledge beyond the core curriculum.

This is the third consecutive year that the APIIT students, in association with the FOSS Community comprising the users and developers of free software and supporters of the free software movement, are staging this event. This will make a valuable contribution to the FOSS movement by raising undergraduate interest and awareness on development and use of FOSS.

The APIIT undergraduates, lecturers, APIIT alumni, FOSS community and other fellow university students will take part in this event.

Guest speakers from renowned organisations in the industry including ICTA, The Linux Centre, THINKCube, Virtusa, WSO2, and OrangeHRM will add value to the FOSS Conference sharing their expertise and highlighting the value and potential of the use and development of FOSS during technical sessions.

The tech-talks will be followed by a FOSS Web Designing Competition, a Code Competition and an Installfest. The Installfest is an installation festival where computer users will have the opportunity to install FOSS on their machines. This event will help popularise the usage of FOSS.

APIIT FOSS Con is yet another event that provides APIIT students with a forum to integrate with industry specialists in a knowledge sharing session.

During their studies at APIIT, students are encouraged to actively engage in academic and extra-curricular to be abreast of ongoing developments in relation to their chosen field of study and at the same time develop themselves as dynamic professionals.
