TRI for Deniyaya

A regional Tea Research Institute (TRI) will be opened today at Deniyaya. The new branch will fulfill a long-felt need of over 63,000 tea smallholders in the Southern province.

The Ministry of Plantation Industry has invested Rs.23 million on the TRI office complex at Deniyaya.

Two TRI branches were also set up in Ratnapura and Kandy, according to a spokesman for the TRI.

Tea Research Institute Chairman, Jerry Jayawardane said the TRI Deniyaya branch would serve tea smallholders and 16 plantation companies in the Matara and Hambantota districts.

The new TRI will also facilitate the tea smallholders with the latest technology, knowledge and consultancy.
