Privatisation of Insurance Corp.:
UNP Leader should take responsibility
Chaminda PERERA
Former Prime Minister and UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe should take
the responsibility for the privatisation of Sri Lanka Insurance
Corporation in 2003 without following a proper procedure, said Media
Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena.
The UNP appointed a special committee chaired by then Prime Minister
Ranil Wickremesinghe to look into the possibility of privatising the
SLIC before it was presented to the Cabinet of Ministers in form of a
proposal.
UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe as the Chairman of the committee
should be held responsible for the malpractices that have reportedly
taken place during this process, the Minister said.
Addressing the weekly press briefing at the Media Ministry, the
Minister said Justice and Law Reform Minister Milinda Moragoda was a
mere member of that Committee and the Supreme Court in its judgement
over the SLIC privatisation has not declared that he should be
responsible for this transaction.
