In three years:

'Govt recruited 31,000 teachers'

Education Minister Susil Premajayanth told Parliament that the Government has recruited 31,000 teachers to the teacher service during the past three years.

These 31,000 teachers include graduates and diploma holders graduated from the Colleges of Education, he said.

According to the Minister the number of graduates recruited to education sector has shown a rapid increase during the past few years. There are 74,000 graduates in the Government schools.

He said 12,000 teaching appointments have been given under the category of 'Janasaviya appointments' during the period from 1988 to 1989.

The Education Ministry has to take necessary measures to confirm these 12,000 teachers who have been recruited without a pass in Mathematics at their GCE Ordinary Level examination.
