Bertie Fernando an inspiration for Ananda cadets
Bertie Fernando joined Ananda in 1961 and gave his invaluable service
for 12 years. He had been a very good Mathematics and Physics teacher
for GCE Ordinary Level and we can still remember certain Physics
theorems in magnetism he had thought us. In addition to his teaching Mr.
Fernando held three responsible positions in School, i.e., Prefect of
Games - head of all sports activities, Hostel Warden, and Officer in
charge Contingent (in charge of Senior Cadet team, two junior Cadet
teams and the Band).
This had been a very responsible task and only G. W. Rajapaksa had
held these three positions before. In 1967, under his guidance the
Ananda Cadet Team won the prestigious Herman Loos award. Further, he had
trained eight cadet platoons during his tenure at Ananda.
During Fernando's time Sarath Fonseka became the Cadet Platoon
Sergeant in 1969, and Sarath Weerasekara was a cadet and also became the
Junior Cadet Sergeant in 1968. Sarath Weerasekara captained the Junior
Soccer team in 1970.
Fernando still remembers the well mannered behaviour of three
Karannagoda brothers and Wasantha as the Captain of Swimming and Water
Polo teams. Wasantha became a Queens Scout in his period.
Fernando mentions Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and Dr. Udaya Kumarasinghe as
two students who were with smiling faces all the time.
Fernando had disciplined us and also developed our leadership
qualities and we all wish him long life and good health.
