Sri Lanka aims self-sufficiency in fisheries

Annual forex saving $400 m:

Sri Lanka can save USD 400 million annually in foreign exchange by becoming self-sufficient in fish while providing employment to thousands of people, Chairman Maubima Lanka Foundation Ariyseela Wickramanayake told Daily News Business.

Country has to pay six times more:

Satellite communications underutilized - DG. TRC

Though Sri Lanka is far ahead of other countries in using mobile telecommunication technology, Director General, Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka Priyantha Kariyapperuma conceded that Sri Lanka lags behind in getting the advantages of satellite communications and due to this drawback the country has to pay six times more than the amount required for such communication facilities.

The National Chamber of Commerce of Sri Lanka (NCCSL) was awarded a prestigious award by the World Chamber Congress at the sixth World Chamber Competition conducted recently in Malaysia. The Chamber has been selected for implementing the “ Most Successful Small Business Project” which led to develop the small business in the rural Sri Lanka. The “Grow your Business Project” which was subjected to the World Chamber Competition and selected for the prestigious world Award. The main component of the Grow Your Business Project was setting up a “Business Promotion Fund” to assist the small business sector to purchase machinery and equipment that require for expanding their business. As at December 2008 the chamber has supported 609 entrepreneurs through this project. Here President of the NCCSL Lal de Alwis after receiving the award with another NCCSL official and other winners at the World Chamber Congress.
