SEC planning road show in Jaffna

With the dawn of peace in the country, many industries are swift to expand their business in the Northern and the Eastern provinces. These provinces are now becoming the most money-spinning areas in the country.

There is huge potential for capital market development in NE. The CSE has branched out to several areas in the country. According to the CSE annual report the CSE branch network attracted over 2000 new retail investors into the stock market in 2008.

There is a huge potential for capital market development in these provinces. Speaking to Daily News Business Chairman of Securities and Exchange Commission, (SEC) Udayasiri Kariyawasam, said "We have already opened a capital market information centre at the University of Jaffna to facilitate the business community who are willing to invest in the capital market.

In the meantime, we have requested the Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE) and the stock brokers to set-up branches in Jaffna and with that we are expecting to overcome the distance barrier and provide easy access for the business community in Jaffna," he said.

"SEC is planning to organize a road show to facilitate and educate the Jaffna business community by explaining the advantages and business opportunities which can be gained by investing in the capital market," he said. "We have already requested all the stock brokers to participate in this event and we wish this would encourage the business community in Jaffna to invest in the capital market and also the stock brokers who can expand their business in these untapped areas," he said.

"However, still the infrastructure facilities are not fully developed in these areas. Once these facilities are structured in these areas, we can plan for further business expansion," he said. A senior official representing Sri Lanka's stock brokering industry said that they are willing to expand their businesses in these areas.
