Afridi sends Dutch crashing to defeat
ELMO RODRIGOPULLE reporting from England
Pakistan who had to beat Netherlands to move on to the Super Eight,
beat the Dutch quite convincingly and in style. In reply to the Pakistan
score of 175 for 5 in 20 overs, the Netherlands collapsed dramatically
and in making only 93 conceded victory by 82 runs.
The Netherlands who shocked England had hight expectations when they
took the field today. But when they allowed Pakistan to make 175 for 5,
it was going to be tough. Had the Netherrlands made a score of 151 it
would have been sufficient to take them to the next round. But they gave
a shocking batting display and tumbled managing only just 93.
Sahid Afridi was the chief wrecker with 4 for 11. He had support
coming from Saeed Ajmal who had 3 for 9. Both spinners bowled
beautifully and no Netherland batsmen could master them
Nertherlands or Pakistan had to win this Group B game to qualify for
the Super Eight. When the teams lined up for their national anthems,
they had determination writ on their faces and it was an indication that
an exciting game was going to unfold Pakistan won the vital toss and
decided to bat this time round on a Lord’s wicket that looked good for a
lot of runs.
Pakistan hurt to the quick by the defeat against England opened with
Salman Butt and hard hitting Kamran Akmal and they were off to a
promising start putting on 28,before Butt departed for 18 in 13 balls.
Every batsman who walked in after, were going for their shots and the
runs were coming nicely and quickly.
Yet the Netherland’s bowlers were undaunted and stuck to their task
of trying to contain the batsmen Kamran Akmal showed he has the
temperament for this style of game by smashing 41 in 30 balls with two
sixes. Batsmen who followed Shoaib Malik 30 from 28 balls, skipper
Younus Khan 36 from 20 balls, and Misbah ul Haq 31 from 20 balls helped
Pakistan make 175 for six.
The score seemed a good one and what the Pakistanis had to do was
take even the half chances that came their way and not give a repeat of
their shocking catching exhibition they displayed against England where
their ground fielding and catching was atrocious.
