Elected

The Most Venerable Dimbulkumbure Wimaladhamma Thera was unanimously elected by the Karaka Sangha Sabha of the Malwatta Chapter of the Siyam Nikaya as its Anunayaka Thera yesterday.

Seminar

Almuslimaath, an Association of Sri Lankan Muslim Women and Girls, has organized a seminar on 'Guidance to working girls' at the Malsara hall, Dehiwela (near the Dehiwela junction) on May 2, from 9.30 a.m. to 2.00 p.m for women. It will be conducted in English and Tamil.

Renaming of 'Reid Avenue'

Reid Avenue, Colombo will be renamed 'Philip Gunawardena Mawatha' at a ceremony to be held near the Cinnamon Gardens police station at 10.30 a.m. today (May 1), said Philip Gunawardena Commemoration Committee Secretary E.S. Hewage.


Bahais of Sri Lanka National Convention

The 48th National Convention of the Bahais of Sri Lanka will be held from May 1 to 3, 2009, at the Baha'I Training Institute, Kadugannawa.

A member of the Board of Counsellors for Asia N.C. Baskaran will grace the occasion. Over 100 delegates and observers from various parts of the country will participate.


Hand ribbon embroidery exhibition

A hand and ribbon embroidery exhibition sponsored by Negombo Muslim Women's Association will be held on May 02 at 9 a.m. at Al-Haj A.R.M. Jabir memorial Hall, 29/32/1, Jumma Masjid Road, Periyamulla, Negombo. The exhibition will be opened by Al-Haj Haja Najimudeen at 9 a.m.


Dance recital

The Dance Institute of Mirenda Hemalatha will present a dance recital with various dance items on May 3 at 9 a.m. at the Botanical Garden, Gampaha to commemorate World Dance Day.


Evening of friendship

An evening of friendship and good cheer to promote fellowship and cooperation between batchmates of the batch of 98 of Zhaira College, Kalmunai will be held at the Dehiwala Old Boys, Club building on May 3.


Under the plough

Seventy-five acres of abandoned paddy lands in the Walallawita Divisional Secretariat Division will be brought under the plough during this Yala cultivation season under the food-drive campaign of the Government.

Suwarna Kanthi of the Agricultural Centre at Pelawatta told the Agricultural Committee meeting held at Kalutara that 228 farmers have consented to re-cultivate the paddy-land in the Yala season.

She said the farmers have been educated in the re-cultivation methods.

The farmers have utilised the traditional methods in the re-cultivation program.


Mobile book sale

The Department of Educational Publications has made arrangements to distribute additional text books needed for Grades 12 and 13 (A/L) classes through a mobile service program.

Accordingly A/L Arts, Science and Mathematics text books published by the Department will be sold through a mobile service said Commissioner General of the Department W. M. N. J. Pushpakumara.

These books are available in all three languages. Text books recommended for other grades and other books published by the Department for the reading public will also be available at these mobile services he said.


Seminar on 'Sri Lanka future of the Nation'

The national seminar on " Sri Lanka - Future of the Nation" organized by the World Alliance for Peace in Sri Lanka (WAPS) will be held at the BMICH, Colombo on May 4 from 3.00pm to 7.00pm.

The seminar has been organized to educate Sri Lankans on the moves taken by the WAPS in collaboration with the Sinhala diaspora to counter the false propaganda campaign launched by the LTTE throughout the world. The seminar will be chaired by veteran constitutional lawyer S.L. Gunasekera.


Akashi here

Japanese special envoy Yashushi Akashi will visit the Menikfarm welfare village today (May 1, 2009) with Resettlement and Disaster Relief Services Minister Rishard Bathiutheen and senior government officials. Akashi will also meet the Foreign Affairs Minister Rohitha Bogollagama and Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, official sources said. (LdeS)
