May Day rallies

Socialist Alliance

The May Day Rally of the Socialist Alliance will be held at the Viharamhadevi Open Theatre Colombo, on the following theme.

* Unite the country through a political settlement. * Widen social justice. * Safeguard the rights of the working people. * Stop curtailment of labour laws. * Do not shift the burden of the world capitalist economic crisis on the working people.

The demonstration will commence at 1.00 p.m. The May Day Rally is at 4.00 p.m. The May Day demonstration will commence from the premises of the statue of the late Dr. N. M. Perera at Borella and pass through Borella, Punchi Borella, Maradana Road, Piyadasa Sirisena Mawatha, Vipulasena Mawatha, Deans Road, Eye Hospital Junction, Alexandra Place and reach Viharamahadevi Open Theatre.

L. R. Stephen, Media co-ordinator of the Socialist Alliance said that the Lanka Samasamaja Party, Communist Party of Sri Lanka, Democratic Left Front and other political parties of the said Alliance along with their respective trade unions, youth, women, student and peasant organisations including other mass organisations will take part in this demonstration.


Ceylon Estates Staffs' Union

The Ceylon Estates Staffs' Union celebrates its May Day rally this year at Hatton town. The members will assemble near the C.E.S.U. Office, Hatton between 9 a.m. to 9.30 a.m. and will proceed on procession through Main Street, Hatton to Prince Hall.

The May Day rally will commence at 10.30 a.m.

P. Ramasivam, General Secretary, Nath Amarasinghe, Treasurer - Anton Warnakulasuriya, Deputy President, M.K. Somaratne, Vice Chairman, Dhammika Jayawardena and S.S. Jeyakumar will address the rally.

The theme of the May Day celebrations this year is trade union unity and march forward towards workers rights.
