Sugar, dhal price control lifted

The Government has decided to abolish the price control on sugar and dhal effective from midnight yesterday under a gazette notification, Trade, Consumer Affairs and Co-operatives Minister Bandula Gunawardhana said.

The price control on these consumer goods was imposed during the Sinhala and Hindu New Year season to provide relief to consumers.

Though the price control on sugar and dhal was abolished, the Government would not hesitate to reintroduce price control if the trade made attempts to increase prices, he said. The Government will also explore the possibility of ascertaining whether dhal and sugar could be imported at lower prices from other countries and will provide them at lower prices through Lak Sathosa trade outlets and Coop City outlets, he noted.
