Awards ceremony

The Diploma in Commercial Arbitration awards ceremony will be held today, at the Committee Room E of the BMICH at 4 p.m.

Deshamanya Charith P. de Silva will be the Chief Guest.

The guest of honour will be Supreme Court Judge, Justice Saleem Marsoof PC.

The fourth Diploma in Commercial Arbitration was conducted by the Institute for the Development of Commercial Law and Practice (ICLP). Attorney at Law Harshini de Fonseka topped the batch with a distinction and won the S.S. Wijeratne award for 2007/2008.

K.C. Kamalasabeyson scholarship holder W.B. Anne Dinusha Fernando secured a merit pass.


Devotional Songs

A musical show of Islamic Devotional Songs by famous singer and Rupavahini and SLBC artiste Kalaikkamal Jamaldeen Mahudhoom will be held at the Jubilee Hall, Hyde Park Corner, Colombo 2 tomorrow at 6.45 p.m.

These devotional songs will consist of gazzals, songs on Quthbul Hind Ajmeer Khaja Rahmathullahi Alaihi.

This singer has staged musical shows in Switzerland, London and India during his 29 year career in this field. He has also produced CDs.

Invitations can be obtained from the Dewatagaha Sheikh Usman Voliullah Dharga Sheriff Office, Colombo 7.


He needs your help

M.M. Fareed a father of four, of No. 210/22/1, Siridhamma Mawatha, Colombo is suffering from a kidney ailment and has been recommended an urgent kidney surgery which is estimated to cost Rs. 800,000.

He says he is not in a position to foot this bill due to his present economic plight and seeks public assistance.

Kalutara city to get facelift

The Kalutara city will undergo accelerated development utilising technologies and be brought on par with the Colombo city, Construction and Engineering Services Minister Rajitha Senaratne said.

Under the accelerated Kalutara development project, the Kalutara sacred area will be developed while residential apartments, a luxury shopping complex, a Court complex, a police station, a bus halt, a hotel, hospital complex and a playground will also be constructed in the Kalutara city using the modern technologies at a cost of Rs. 4,000 million, Minister Senaratne added.

Meanwhile a development plan has been drawn to expedite the project construction under the direction of Minister Rajitha Senaratne and the senior officials of State Engineering Corporation and other relevant Government bodies.

The Kalutara district a rapidly developing city next to Colombo but structures constructed without proper planning has damaged its beauty.


 

AGM

The AGM of Subhadrarama Pirivena, Gangodawila, Nugegoda will be held on Saturday, July 12, at 2.30 p.m. at the Subhadrarama Pirivena Main Hall, Chief Secretary, General Committee and Director, National Education Centre, Maharagama Ven. Dr. Mabulgoda Sumanarathana Thera said.

Ven. Dr. Thera kindly request all lay and clergy members of the Privena to be present for the General Meeting.


Sign-Along as fundraiser

The Past Pupils Association of St. Joseph's Convent, Kegalle, Colombo branch which held its inaugural meeting on July 12, 1986 has organised a Sing-Along to collect funds to help the Home for the Elders at Ranwella, Kegalle and the creche which is run by the Sisters of Charity of St. Joseph's Convent, Kegalle.

The Sing-Along will be held on Saturday, July 12 from 7 p.m. onwards at the BMICH Banquet Hall. Entrance will be by a Song Book. Please call 0112713915 or 0112116272 for details.


People's summit

The 7th People's Summit organised by South Asia Partnership International (SAPI) in collaboration with South Asia Partnership Sri Lanka on the theme of Women in Democratic Governance with special emphasis on violence against women in politics will be held on July 16 at Hotel Trans Asia, Colombo from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The chief guest will be Minister of Housing and Common Amenities Ferial Ashraff.


Prize-giving

The Masjidul Muneer Maal Madarasa of Keselwatte has organised their 25th anniversary and 16th prize-giving on July 13 at 9.00 a.m. at the Pradeepa Hall, Gunesinghepura, Colombo 12.


National artist award winners

The Purawalar Puththaka Poonga has organised a reception for the 2008 National Artist Award winners S. Karunarathna and Kalabooshana Kalaichelwan on July 13 at 4.30 p.m. at the Queens Cafe, Mount Lavinia.


Annual prize giving

The annual prize-giving of S. Thomas' College Mount Lavinia, will be held on July 18 at the College Hall from 4 p.m. Dr. Palitha Kohona will be the chief guest.


Lectures

Amarendra Narayan Lal and Roy Biswas from Vivekananda Kendra, Yoga University, Bangalore will deliver a lecture on "Yoga as alternative therapy for various ailments" on Tuesday, July 15 at 6 p.m. at the Indian Cultural Centre, 133, Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Colombo 04.

Srilal Perera, a past pupil of the Chitrasena Kalayathanaya will deliver a lecture on "Indo-Lanka relations in the Gam-Madu rituals of Pattini amma" on Friday, July 18 at 6 p.m. at the Indian Cultural Centre, 133, Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Colombo 04.

The events are open to all.


Badur Mowlood, Majilis

The recital of Badur Mawlood, will start after Magrib Prayers and will continue until Isha prayers at the Nawala Jummah Mosque on July 10.


Prayers, religious lectures

The Rathibathul Jalaliya programme conducted by Maulavi Hafiz Aadhil, Principal of Al Kullieyathul Arusiyathul Qudiriya Arabic College will continue till Isha prayers.

A religious lecture will also be conducted by Moulavi Al Haj A. B. M. Mubarak (Falahi) after Isha prayers.


Cigarettes seized

The Customs Preventive Division yesterday detected and seized a consignment of imported cigarettes brought to Sri Lanka as unmanufactured cargo to the value of Rs. 3.3 million.

Head of the Preventive Division, Customs Assistant Director K. A. Dharmasena who is directing investigations into the racket said that the cargo had no marks or names to indicate that the consignment had come from Dubai.

Customs Superintendent D. M. Hettiarachchi and Assistant Superintendent Jayaweera are assisting in the investigations.
