Eastern Province Chief Minister Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan in his inaugural speech at the maiden session of the Provincial Council yesterday strongly urged his colleagues to shed all differences and unite to transform the multi-ethnic East into a prime example of a pluralist democracy based on ethnic harmony.

India's naval surveillance big help - FM

India's maritime "surveillance" has "helped" Sri Lanka in "a big way" in facing the challenge from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama told The Hindu that his country would continue to "advocate" that the international community take steps to dry up the sources of funding and other forms of support for the LTTE.

One arrested in Dehiwala railway blast

Police yesterday arrested one suspect in connection with the parcel bomb which exploded injuring 18 including three women. The parcel bomb targeting a Colombo bound office train from Panadura was set off last morning in Wasela Mawatha between Dehiwela and Wellawatte.
