President Mahinda Rajapaksa paid homage to the Sri Dalada Maligawa yesterday. Dambane Vanniyela Ettho also participated in the event. Thereafter the President called on Most Ven. LTTE artillery attack on Murunkan hospital

A tense situation prevailed in Murunkan in Mannar yesterday as LTTE directed 120 mm artillery fire at the Murunkan hospital causing heavy damage to a hospital building yesterday morning, Military Spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara told the Daily News.

Sri Lanka's core inflation 9 per cent

Sri Lanka's core inflation has reached 9.3 per cent at end March 2008, according to the Central Bank. The core inflation index published by the Central Bank is based on the New Colombo Consumers' Price Index - CCPI(N), compiled by the Department of Census and Statistics and excludes food and energy items, in line with the international practice.

EU poll: UNP, SLMC to contest under Elephant symbol

The UNP and the SLMC yesterday decided to jointly contest the upcoming Eastern Provincial Council Election under the elephant symbol. Both parties have reached this consensus at the UNP Nomination Board meeting which held the Cambridge Terrace yesterday.

GTH buys Rs. 32 b stake in SLT

Single largest transaction in the history of the Colombo Stock Exchange:

Global Telecommunications Holdings N.V. ("GTH"), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Usaha Tegas Sdn Bhd ("UT"), a Malaysia based investment holding company, acquired 635,076,318 shares representing 35.19% of Sri Lanka Telecom PLC ("SLT" or the "Company") from NTT Communications Corporation for a purchase consideration of Rs. 32 billion.
